Long Beach Oldsmobile Repair

Oldsmobile was an American car manufacturer owned for most of its existence by General Motors. Olds Motor Vehicle Co was founded by Ransom Eli Olds in 1897. In its 107-year history, it produced 35.2 million cars, at least 14 million of which were built at its Lansing, Michigan factory. When it was dissolved in 2004, Oldsmobile was the oldest surviving American automobile brand, and one of the oldest in the world after Daimler, Peugeot, and Tatra. Although the brand was closed in 2004, it remains an active trademark of the GM Corporation.

Ransom E. Olds and his company pioneered many things, including the crucial assembly line method of mass production. Although Henry Ford is widely credited with inventing the assembly line, he actually was responsible only for adding a conveyor belt to the assembly line model. Olds actually developed and patented the very first assembly line, putting in place things such as defined repetitive operations, fixed stations, and parts delivered to the worker. In 1902, the Oldsmobile factory’s output quadrupled from 425 cars (in 1901) to 2,500. By 1905, the factory was building 5,000 cars a year, putting the Oldsmobile Curved Dash in place as the best selling car in America and one of the first mass-produced vehicles in history.

Oldsmobile was one of the pioneers of the automatic transmission, and a leader in performance, styling, and luxury throughout much of the 20th century. Its Cutlass Supreme was at one time one of the best-selling cars in the U.S., and it was hugely successful in the 1990s, but some critical failures in the late 90s and early 2000s caused GM to cancel the Oldsmobile brand.
