Long Beach Tune Ups

Tune Ups – You may have heard of getting your car a tune-up, but what exactly does that mean? Why is it necessary? Is it really in fact necessary to keep your car running well?

Tune ups intervals vary from one vehicle to another. Most older vehicles with non electronic ignitions should get a tune up about every 10,000 miles or once a year, whichever comes first, but newer cars with electronic ignition and fuel injection systems are designed to go tens of thousands of miles without needing a major tune-up.

Most basic tune-ups include performance checks – battery voltage, compression tests, vacuum tests, an ECU scan, exhaust emissions, idle speed check, ignition timing check, and a visual inspection of hoses, belts and fluids. Any parts that seem off are further inspected and repaired or made known to the owner.

Your vehicle’s owner’s manual should give you recommended tune-up intervals, but even if it says that your vehicle does not need a tune-up very often, there are several signs that you should watch out for to check that your vehicle is working as efficiently as it can. If you drive in heavy traffic or tow a lot of weight, more strain will be placed on your engine and it may need to be tuned more often. Here are some signs that you may need a tune-up: The car stalls a lot. The spark plugs may be fouled or worn, the gap between the spark plug electrodes may need adjusting, or an electronic sensing device may need to be adjusted.

The engine is running roughly when idling or when you accelerate. Chances are the vehicle needs a tune-up.

The car gets harder to start. The problem can be in the starting system (for example, a weak battery), in the fuel system (for example, a weak fuel pump), or in the ignition system, or can be due to a faulty electronic component, such as the electronic control unit (ECU).
