Overheating is one of the easiest ways to kill your car. With temperatures in your engine reaching more than 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, there is a lot of heat to deal with. If you notice that your temperature gauge is higher than usual or if you notice puddles of coolant under your car, it may be time to stop by Orozco’s Auto Service for an inspection.
A functional cooling system which circulates antifreeze/coolant and dissipates engine heat is critical to keeping your car from overheating and reaching destructive engine temperatures. Without a cooling system that functions properly, heat levels of a car’s engine are high enough to damage itself. Aluminum heads can warp, head gaskets can blow, or other components will deform, and sooner or later, the engine will fail. All of those are expensive repairs already, and engine failure would necessitate replacing the entire engine.
There are five major components in a vehicle’s cooling system:
Radiator: the radiator is usually located in front of an engine behind the grill or air intake, and is made of a set of tubes called the core through which coolant flows. These are surrounded by cooling fins, which dissipate the heat from the coolant into the air.
Radiator cap: the cap which covers a hole where coolant is poured in. The radiator cap is also designed to dissipate excess pressure.
Radiator hoses: a series of durable flexible hoses designed to handle engine vibration and high temperatures which carry the coolant from the radiator to the engine.
Thermostat: the device responsible for keeping the engine at the proper operating temperature.
Water pump: the heart of the cooling system, which pumps coolant through the whole system and into the engine block.
The best way to protect your engine’s cooling system is by flushing your radiator regularly, at least as often as the intervals listed in your vehicle’s service manual. This keeps the system from getting clogged and ensures that the coolant can flow uninhibited through your engine and keep it at the proper operating temperature.
At Orozco’s Auto Service, we can inspect and maintain your cooling system and keep your car from overheating.
