Why a power seat stops working

Most drivers set their seat once and forget about it, until the day it will not move. Power seats rely on electronics, and electronics fail more often than a simple mechanical lever.

When you press the button on the seat or door panel, the switch sends power to a motor that slides the seat along its track. If any link in that chain fails, the seat can stop moving or only move part of the way.

  • A worn or failed power seat switch
  • A seat motor that has burned out or gotten weak
  • Damaged or loose wiring under the seat
  • Debris jammed in the seat tracks

How we diagnose it

We start with the simple checks, like clearing debris from the tracks and testing the switch. If the switch works and the track is clear, the motor is the next suspect.

To repair a power seat, the seat comes out so we can inspect the motors, switches, and wiring. Once we find the source, we repair or replace it, put everything back together, and test every direction of movement.

Why it is worth fixing

A stuck seat may not affect how the car runs, but it can affect how well you see and reach the controls. If the seat is stuck too far back or too far forward, the pedals and mirrors may not be where you are used to them.

Bring it in

If your power seat is stuck, slow, or moving unusually, bring it to any of our Long Beach or Bellflower shops. We will tell you what is wrong and what it takes to fix it before we start any work.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with a stuck power seat?

The car will still run, but a seat stuck in the wrong position can make it hard to see or reach the pedals comfortably. We recommend getting it checked soon.

Is it the switch or the motor?

We test the switch first. If the switch works and nothing is blocking the track, the motor is usually the cause. A proper diagnosis tells you for sure.

Do you need to remove the seat?

Yes, in most cases. Removing the seat lets us inspect the motors, switches, and wiring and test everything before reinstalling it.

My seat moves slowly. Is that a problem?

Slow movement is often an early sign of a weakening motor or a wiring issue. Catching it early can keep a small repair from turning into a bigger one.
