Long Beach Jeep Repair

Jeep is an American automobile brand that is currently a division of FCA US LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Jeep, along with the remaining assets of its former owner American Motors, was acquired by the former Chrysler Corporation in 1987. Jeep currently produces sports utility and off-road vehicles, but has also produced pickup trucks in the past.

Jeep’s heritage can be traced back to 1941, when Willys MB Jeeps went into production specifically for the U.S. military. These were arguably the oldest mass-produced four-wheel drive automobile, and Jeep became the primary light 4-wheel-drive vehicle of the U.S. Army and its allies during World War II and the postwar period. The term Jeep became ubiquitous worldwide after the war. As Smithsonian Magazine author Doug Stewart put it, “the spartan, cramped, and unstintingly functional jeep became the ubiquitous World War II four-wheeled personification of Yankee ingenuity and cocky, can-do determination”.

The first civilian Jeep models were produced in 1945, and are cited as the inspiration for a number of other light utility vehicles such as the Land Rover brand. Many Jeep variants or copies have been designed for military and civilian use in other nations.

Jeep has gone through several ownership changes in its history including Willys-Overland, Kaiser, the American Motors Corporation, and most recently Fiat-Chrysler. Jeeps have been built under license by various manufacturers around the world, including Mahindra in India, EBRO in Spain, and several in South America. The history and development of the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), commonly known as the Humvee, also has strong ties to Jeep.

The Jeep brand carries a strong product recognition and identity today, with trademarks such as their seven-slot vertical grill and emphasis on off-road prowess. One of Jeep’s current trademarks is the “Trail Rated” badge, introduced on certain Jeep models in 2004 to mark that vehicle trail worthy according to Jeep’s specifications. The models today that hold a Trail Rated status are the Wrangler, Liberty, and Grand Cherokee. Jeep has established a base line of qualities that dictates what makes a vehicle trail worthy: traction, ground clearance, off road articulation, maneuverability, and water fording. These vehicles are tested on a portion of the Rubicon Trail, a 22-mile long trail in the Sierra Nevada mountains widely considered the toughest off-road trail in the U.S.

Jeep advertising campaigns have always emphasized their off-road capabilities. Today, the Wrangler is one of the few remaining four-wheel-drive vehicles with solid front and rear axles, which are known for their durability, strength, and articulation. They also have differentials, transmissions, and heavy duty suspension developed to withstand trail use.

Smaller Jeeps such as the Wrangler also have useful features including a short wheelbase, narrow frames, and large approach, breakover, and departure angles, allowing them to traverse terrain where full-size four-wheel drive trucks have difficulty.

Jeep has been criticized for somewhat watering down its brand identity recently with less robust small crossovers that still try to give the appearance of capable off-road vehicles such as the Patriot and Compass.

Jeep vehicles are known for being rugged and tough, but do not have the best reputation for reliability or quality. Their current model lineup includes the Grand Cherokee full-size SUV, the Cherokee SUV, the Renegade compact SUV, the Wrangler compact SUV, the Patriot crossover, and the Compass compact SUV.
