What the fuel pump does
The gas tank sits well away from the engine, so a fuel pump keeps gasoline flowing to it. When the pump weakens, it moves less fuel, and eventually the car will not start or run.
Signs of a failing pump
- Hesitating to start, or long cranking before the engine starts
- Loss of power or stuttering during acceleration
- A whining sound
- A check engine light
Diagnosis first
Other parts can cause the same symptoms, so we inspect the fuel filters, fuel pickups, fuel pump relays, and electrical connectors before deciding whether the pump needs replacing.
Replacement and care
Replacing a pump is labor-intensive and usually means draining the gas tank first. To help a pump last, keep at least a quarter tank of gas in the car. Low fuel makes the pump work harder and can make it fail sooner. Our shops can test it for you.
