Long Beach Fuel Pump Repair

You probably know that your vehicle has a gas tank which is usually several feet away from its engine. You may have also heard that the Ford Model T had a gravity-fed fuel system, which would result in owners having to drive backwards up hills to prevent the engine from becoming starved of fuel and stalling out. Of course, today’s cars are much more advanced – they use a component known as the fuel pump to keep gasoline flowing into your engine. If your car stalls out nowadays and there aren’t any mechanical problems with it, you’re probably just out of gas, no matter how steep of a hill you’re driving up.

There are several ways you can tell if your fuel pump may be going out. Some of the most common symptoms are your vehicle hesitating to start, loss of power or stuttering during acceleration, a whining sound, and an illuminated check engine light.

Your engine needs gas to run. A failing fuel pump will not be able to pump the gas as well from the gas tank into the engine, and will become less and less efficient as it wears out more. Eventually, it will be so inefficient that it will be unable to pump an adequate amount of gas to your engine, and your car will no longer be able to start or run.

To prolong your fuel pump’s longevity, you should try to keep at least a quarter tank of gas in your car at all times. Low fuel levels will make the pump work harder, and cause it to fail more quickly.

Replacing a fuel pump is usually a relatively labor intensive task. Most of the time, it requires that you drain your vehicle’s gas tank first. Here at Orozco’s Auto Service in Long Beach, we will inspect your fuel filters, fuel pickups, fuel pump relays, and electrical connectors before deciding whether your fuel pump needs to be replaced or not – any of these items malfunctioning could very easily cause some of the same symptoms as a failing fuel pump.
