Differential Service
A whine or howl when turning could be a low or dirty differential fluid. We service and repair differentials and transaxles.

What a differential does
Turning a corner, the outside wheel travels farther than the inside wheel, so it has to spin faster. The differential makes that possible while still sending power to both wheels. Without one, tires would rub and skip during turns.
All rear-wheel drive vehicles have a differential at the back, and most four-wheel drive vehicles have one in front too. Front-wheel drive vehicles use a transaxle, which combines the differential and transmission. All-wheel drive vehicles have a differential or transfer case to balance front and rear speeds.
Why it needs service
All of the engine’s power passes through the differential, so it needs to be strong and well lubricated. Gear oil does for the differential what motor oil does for your engine. Service means draining the dirty fluid and replacing it with clean fluid.
Service intervals vary greatly by vehicle, so check your owner’s manual. Towing, off-road driving, or wet conditions mean you need service sooner than if you drive only on clean pavement.
Signs of a problem
A whine or howl from the differential is the most common symptom. It occurs when oil is low or dirty, often shows when turning, and may get louder with speed. Have it inspected right away to prevent serious damage.
