What a transfer case is

The transfer case is a special gearbox in vehicles that send power to more than one drive axle, usually four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models. Like a transmission, it moves power from the engine to the wheels, but it powers two or more axles. In all-wheel-drive vehicles it also shifts power between axles based on traction and road conditions.

Why the fluid matters

Lubricating fluid keeps the gears cool and reduces friction. It should be replaced at regular intervals to prevent wear from old or contaminated fluid. Follow the interval in your owner’s manual; towing or off-road driving can call for more frequent service. Fluid level and condition should also be checked during regular inspections, and if the level is low the transfer case should be inspected for leaks.

Warning signs

• Grinding or whining from under the vehicle
• Shifting that is not as smooth as it should be
• Sticking in two-wheel drive
• Jumping out of four-wheel drive without warning
