What the PCV system does
Your vehicle has to meet California Air Resources Board (CARB) emissions standards. One important part of the emissions system is positive crankcase ventilation (PCV). A valve on the crankcase vents excess gas and pressure through a hose into the intake manifold, where it is burned as fuel instead of being wasted.
How it fails
Heat and pressure take a toll over time. The PCV valve can clog and stop venting efficiently, or the hose can crack or break, leaking gas and oil and no longer relieving pressure from the crankcase.
Symptoms to watch for
- Check engine light
- Rough running or misfiring at idle
- A hissing or whistling noise from the engine
- Oil leaks or sludge
- Loss of fuel economy
Why to fix it promptly
Excess pressure can push leaks past other gaskets, and the car may fail a smog check. You can also burn more gas and put out more pollution. PCV hoses are made to a specific shape to handle high pressure and heat, so we use the correct hose for your vehicle.
