Easy to miss
Brake lights and turn signals are on the outside of your car, so you may not know when they fail. Some vehicles show a warning on the dash when a bulb is out, but many do not. Brake lights are especially hard to check without help. A failed one can get you a ticket or put you at risk of being rear-ended.
Start with the bulb
The most common cause is a burned-out bulb. Time and the elements wear bulbs down eventually. Keeping replacement bulbs in your car can keep you legal and safe in a pinch.
When it is not the bulb
If new bulbs do not fix it, the cause may be elsewhere in the circuit: the brake light switch, a fuse, a corroded bulb socket, a bad ground, or the light’s wire harness. A burned or melted pin can cause a slight voltage irregularity and may set a warning or fault code. Turn signals that fail or work intermittently are more complicated because they involve switching on and off.
Bring it in
Drive carefully and have a failed brake light fixed promptly. Until a turn signal is fixed, use hand signals. Our ASE-certified technicians will diagnose the problem, fix it, and reset lights and warnings.
Frequently asked questions
How can I check my brake lights alone?
It is hard without help. Have someone watch while you press the pedal, or back up to a reflective surface such as a garage door and look for the glow.
My new bulb does not work. Why?
The brake light switch, a fuse, a corroded socket, a bad ground, or a burned pin in the wiring may be to blame. Bring it in and we will test the circuit.
