What control arms do

Control arms connect the suspension to the vehicle frame and keep the wheels in line with the body while letting them move smoothly up and down. They attach to the frame with bushings and to the suspension through the ball joint, which allows the wheel to turn and pivot.

Most cars have two to four, depending on the suspension design. Some vehicles only have them in front, and some have upper and lower arms working together in a double wishbone design.

Why they wear out

Large potholes and bumps can bend or break a control arm, and bushings can wear out on their own. Many wear out after tens of thousands of miles, depending on driving conditions.

Signs of a problem

  • Uneven tire wear
  • Steering wheel vibration
  • Banging or clunking over bumps

What to expect

Bushings and ball joints often need replacing along with a control arm, depending on how worn they are, since all of these parts work together. An alignment is needed after replacement. We will inspect the whole assembly and explain what we find.
