Common A/C problems
Auto air conditioning systems are sensitive. A loose hose or seal can let refrigerant leak out and compromise the whole system, so small problems are worth catching early. The usual causes of poor cooling are a refrigerant leak, a faulty compressor, or a clogged condenser.
What the symptom usually points to
- Weak airflow: a clogged cabin air filter, a failing blower motor or resistor, a blocked evaporator, or a stuck blend door
- Not as cold as it used to be: a refrigerant leak at a seal, gasket, hose, or component; a clogged tube; a failed compressor, condenser, or evaporator; or a failed switch, relay, or fuse
- Cold at first, then warm: a clogged expansion valve, a faulty compressor clutch, a blown fuse, or a leak
- Bad odor from the vents: usually a dirty cabin air filter or a moldy evaporator case
How we approach it
We inspect the system to find the root cause, then repair it, whether that means replacing a compressor, fixing a leak, or cleaning a condenser. If you find a leak early, it has usually not caused much damage.
For odors, we clean the A/C lines, evaporator, and ventilation system, treat them with a biocide to kill bacteria, mold, and fungi, and deodorize the ventilation system and interior.
Keep it running well
