How power steering works
Most hydraulic power steering systems include a pump, fluid, belts, hoses, and a steering gear, usually a rack and pinion. When you turn the wheel, the pump sends fluid to the steering gear to add pressure, which helps turn the wheels with little effort.
Signs of a problem
- The wheel is harder to turn, especially at low speeds
- A whining or groaning from the pump, often from low fluid or air in the system
- Power steering fluid pooling under the car
What we do
We can diagnose and repair a leak, rebuild or replace the pump, and take care of other components. We inspect the entire system while repairing so you are not back a week later with a different leak, and we tell you whether it is one leak or several so you can decide what to do. We use the correct fluid for your car.
Do not ignore it
If the steering suddenly becomes very heavy, or you hear whining or lose assist, have it inspected right away. Steering without assist takes much more effort, especially at low speed, and can make it hard to avoid an obstacle. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended fluid service interval.
