When a repair is possible
Punctures in the tread area can often be repaired. A proper repair is a patch and plug combination applied from the inside, with the tire removed from the wheel so it can be inspected inside and out.
When it has to be replaced
- Sidewall or shoulder damage, since those areas flex constantly and a repair can fail
- Large punctures, cuts, or gashes, which likely damage the steel cords
- Bulges, tread separation, broken or slipped belts, or bead damage
- Tires driven while flat or on very low air pressure
Why we err on the safe side
A tire with borderline damage may or may not be safe to repair, so the safest option is replacement. A blowout can mean a loss of control and a collision.
Prevent flats
Check your tire pressure at least once a month. If you get a flat, stop driving right away because the tire might still be repairable.
